ONE OF OUR KIND (Nicola Yoon) - January 26/25

There’s definitely nothing subtle about Yoon’s politics but this Get Out-like story kept me pretty hooked. The main character often seems like a caricature of an activist but she became quite compelling and the final twist sure hits pretty hard. *** out of ****

INTO THE STORM (Cecelia Ahern) - January 20/25

I remember liking some of Ahern’s other books but this one didn’t really work for me. I liked the main character and the story about her starting over in a small town was appealing, but everything else was a little dull (eg the mystery surrounding the hit and run, the thriller elements, the dull stuff involving her mom). The book just feels so darn long. ** out of ****

DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER (Jeff Lindsay) - January 12/25

I basically enjoyed this although it definitely felt too long and Dexter’s relentless inner monologue was a bit much sometimes. But it’s an interesting new angle on the Dexter saga (he tortures his victims!) and it’s pretty shocking that he murdered LaGuerta. *** out of ****

CHRISTINE (Stephen King) - January 4/25

Hot damn, this is one long book. It’s a super straight forward premise that’s somehow been employed within an epic length novel. I did enjoy the whole thing and obviously the various characters did become very well developed, but I just don’t think I needed this much book. *** out of ****
