SATURDAY - Ian McEwan (August 24/06)

Ah, literature. Feels good to read something that is incredibly well written and not pulpy at all. McEwan lays out one day in the life of a neurosurgeon to often fascinating results. There's a lot of good stuff here, including Henry Perowne's visit to his deteriorating mother and an encounter with a ruthless street punk, and even though most of the novel transpires through Henry's thoughts, there are few dull spots. A true accomplishment. **** out of ****
